Why God Makes You Wait: It’s More Than Just Patience
Have you ever found yourself waiting for something so intensely that it feels like time is playing tricks on you? Maybe it’s a job, a spouse, financial breakthrough, or a long-awaited dream. The longer you wait, the more your mind starts to wander—doubts creep in, frustration rises, and suddenly, compromises that once seemed unthinkable start to feel reasonable.
Waiting does something to us. It has a way of pulling back the curtain, exposing the raw, unfiltered version of who we are. It doesn’t just test our patience—it reveals our priorities, desires, and values in ways we never anticipated.
What Delays Reveal About Us
I had this realization while studying Acts 7:40-41: “They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.”
Moses was on the mountain receiving divine instruction, yet in his absence, the Israelites' impatience led them to create an idol. Their waiting period didn't just delay them—it exposed them. Their faith was shallow and deep down they had the desire to make an idol for themselves, and the delay was just the perfect opportunity to bring that to the surface.
I saw myself in this story. The moments of waiting in my life were not just about the absence of an answer—they were mirrors reflecting my true character. Waiting forces us to confront the uncomfortable: Are we truly faithful, or are we just comfortable when things are going our way? Do we trust God’s timing, or do we only trust when He moves quickly?
True Values Stand the Test of Time
Think about it—how many times have you heard someone say, “I would never do that” until the right circumstance tested them? The waiting season is the true proving ground of character. The story of Saul in 1 Samuel 13:8-14 is a clear example—his inability to wait for the prophet Samuel exposed his impatience and lack of trust in God, ultimately leading to his downfall.
Waiting Reshapes Priorities
Waiting forces us to confront our priorities. It asks us what truly matters. Do we want to get married or do we want to stay married? Do we want a good marriage, or are we willing to do the work required to build one? Do we desire financial success, or are we prepared to handle wealth with wisdom and discipline? The waiting season is where we separate wishful thinking from true pursuit.
At its core, waiting is not about passivity—it’s about preparation. It is the season where God refines us, aligns us, and ensures that what we are asking for is not just something we want, but something we are ready to sustain.
How to Handle the Waiting Season
Instead of resenting delays, what if we embraced them? What if we used them as opportunities for self-reflection, refinement, and growth? Waiting is a divine classroom where we learn endurance, patience, and alignment with God’s will. It teaches us to distinguish between what we merely desire and what we are truly prepared for.
So, the next time you find yourself waiting, ask yourself: What is this delay revealing about me? Because in the end, it is not just about getting what you want—it’s about becoming the person who can steward it well.
